As an observer from outside all of these fields, I find it stunning that there does not seem to be (correct me if it exists) some comprehensive efforts by dendros to (1) bring many classic proxies up to date before AR5, and (2) rigorously analyze whether various proxies do or do not closely track relevant instrumental and satellite records of temperatures.

Surely by 2010-2012 a lot of proxy records could have been analyzed for the past 30+ years. Is this happening?

There can no longer be any excuse for reliance upon vague climatologist hand-waving about any "divergence" problems.

A quick question should Steve be reading.
Is this post still valid ? If not, it would be interesting to have an update of the lack of updates.
Note, this isn't a request for "room service", rather its a suggestion for a useful future post.

Hi Steve,

Just getting in to all this. Read Andrew Montford on the hockey stick, following the BBC non-disclosure of January 2006 meeting and reading that the IPCC next major outing is due in 2014.

Given your wish to update proxies back in 2005 - and the very sensible notion that the cost is immaterial compared with the cost of expected energy bill price rises alone to fund policies generated by apparently dubious out of date tree ring proxies - where has this got to?

Will there be new data for IPCC in 2014 - presumably the next big event in the public's consciousness?

As a newcomer this all seems extraordinarily like Alice in Wonderland - but in reality.

By the way, thanks to you Steve for your extraordinary efforts - I can't believe the work you've put in and the knocks you've had to take; it certainly strikes me that the scientists you encountered were as determined to play the man as the ball - and that always pressages a rat, as it were.

It appears that someone has "updated the proxies":

"...UA scientists find evidence of Roman period megadrought.

A new study at the University of Arizona's Laboratory of Tree-Ring Research has revealed a previously unknown multi-decade drought period in the second century A.D.

Almost nine hundred years ago, in the mid-12th century, the southwestern U.S. was in the middle of a multi-decade megadrought. It was the most recent extended period of severe drought known for this region. But it was not the first.

The second century A.D. saw an extended dry period of more than 100 years characterized by a multi-decade drought lasting nearly 50 years, says a new study from scientists at the University of Arizona..."

Doesn't really say if there are new cores, but they've apparently have data going back into the 124 A.D. to 210 A.D time period.

If there are newer cores, then a real scientist could use that data to see if the "treemometers" follow the current rise in temps.
