As you’ve noticed, there was a server crash and the site has been restored from a back-up. I’m told that the site is on a new server. The recurrent down-time leading up to the crash was presumably related. Lost in the backup are my post on Mann at the NAS panel, my update to the Cook et al. post and all comments on Cook et al. and Mann at the NAS panel. My apologies to all. It has nothing to do with us but with the webhost provider. Hopefully the new service has been upgraded in the process.

Hmmm, Mann has moved on again.
Post about Mann, server crashes and post about Mann moves on, a good correlation there although I’m not sure what the r2 statistic is.

Hey Steve. Just by chance I was heading out last night and didn’t have time to read MAnn at the NAS panel and I don’t have INternut at the pub. So I saved it to a word doc. So I’ve actually got the whole thing in all it’s glory (presumably, I didn’t have a chance to read it) up to about 4:00pm yesterday.

Wow, that was an impressive reconstruct! I actually have an old copy that was in my cache. You’ve got it nearly word for word, including the reference to my comment a day or so ago on your blog.
Just one missing thing – your very interesting take on conclusions, your followup remark to the panel and your comments about the panel itself.

It wasn’t a total reconstruct as I had notes for about 70% of it saved. I’d done a big edit online, but it was only about 30%. Someone’s already sent me a cache. Actually, if I’d thought about it, I probably had a cache myself. I didn’t think about it in time. Live and learn. I’ll re-edit to add in the peroration.

If you click on “Cached”, I think you will find a fairly complete version of this page (some later comments excepted).
Do you have administrative access to the database software you are using?
If so you may want to consider setting up off-site transaction logging or database mirroring. That way if there’s another crash like this you will have an up-to-date back-up of the data itself.

Thanks Steve, good idea – I think that lots of the visitors would find it helped if you put the peroration back in, because it was such an interesting encapsulation of your experience at NAS. It would be a pity of people missed it.
