Re #8
Thanks Steve, good idea - I think that lots of the visitors would find it helped if you put the peroration back in, because it was such an interesting encapsulation of your experience at NAS. It would be a pity of people missed it.

Do you have administrative access to the database software you are using?

If so you may want to consider setting up off-site transaction logging or database mirroring. That way if there's another crash like this you will have an up-to-date back-up of the data itself.

Steve,

If you go to Google and type in: Cook et al[2004]: More Cargo Cult?

You will find that the first link which comes up is: Climate Audit » Post-1980 Proxies

If you click on "Cached", I think you will find a fairly complete version of this page (some later comments excepted).

It wasn't a total reconstruct as I had notes for about 70% of it saved. I'd done a big edit online, but it was only about 30%. Someone's already sent me a cache. Actually, if I'd thought about it, I probably had a cache myself. I didn't think about it in time. Live and learn. I'll re-edit to add in the peroration.

Hi Steve,

Wow, that was an impressive reconstruct! I actually have an old copy that was in my cache. You've got it nearly word for word, including the reference to my comment a day or so ago on your blog.

Just one missing thing - your very interesting take on conclusions, your followup remark to the panel and your comments about the panel itself.

Sing out if you want, I'll pass a copy back and you can edit it back in.

Cheers!

Hey Steve. Just by chance I was heading out last night and didn't have time to read MAnn at the NAS panel and I don't have INternut at the pub. So I saved it to a word doc. So I've actually got the whole thing in all it's glory (presumably, I didn't have a chance to read it) up to about 4:00pm yesterday.

I'll pop it over to you.

Dear Steve,

when I opened the Cook page, it looked like there were no comments, so I decided it was an old (=newly reloaded) version. Sorry. Please feel free to erase my comments when you re-organize the articles.

All the best

The original version of the article "Mann at the NAS panel" is here:

http://schwinger.harvard.edu/~motl/mann-at-nas-panel.html

The Reference Frame is almost always ready for any disaster - not only server crashes but also events as likely as attacks of ET aliens or runaway global warming. ;-)
