Personally I take all the formatting out using MS Word or OpenOffice or even Notepad and then use the WordPress editor to put formatting in where I need it.

The WP editor isn’t very useful and I’m going to see if there’s a better one as a plug-in

I’m using Front Page as a html text editor, which isn’t very good.
