Climategate News and Links

It’s hard to keep up with the explosion of stories on Climategate, Pachauri and similar stories now that coverage has expanded outside the climate blogs. I’m going to insert links into comments, either with no commentary or less than a dozen words or so about the content – no editorializing or comment. Please feel free to contribute, but do so on the basis that this is not for discussion, merely listing. Most of us can find our way to the climate blogs. I would particularly appreciate links to newspaper stories and non-climate blogs.

    Challenge of climate change, post-Copenhagen R. K. Pachauri, Feb. 1, 2010, The Hindu, Opinion

    The science of climate change is now well established. . . . in Africa, for instance, as early as 2020. . .in some countries, yields from rain-fed agriculture could be reduced by up to 50 per cent. . . .Today, the power of sceptics has become extremely high because economic interests which resist change support them . . . The challenge . . . is, therefore, to launch urgent grassroots action by civil society, business and local governments.

    SURFACE TEMPERATURE RECORDS: POLICY DRIVEN DECEPTION?

    by Joseph DAleo and Anthony Watts, Science and Public Policy Institute Original Paper, January 26, 2010

    http://scienceandpublicpolicy.org/originals/policy_driven_deception.html

    New Compendium Paper on Surface Temperature Records

    This report is a blockbuster. It is bigger than Climategate and bigger than the recent revelations that the IPCC is corrupt. The authors reveal that the temperature record from U.S. surface stations is unreliable and that NOAA and NASA have conspired to manipulate global temperature records to give the impression that temperatures in the 20th century rose faster than they really did.

    UK Times: UN climate panel shamed by bogus rainforest claim
    http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/environment/article7009705.ece

    • jimspice

      The Times has retracted this story:

      The article “UN climate panel shamed by bogus rainforest claim” (News, Jan 31) stated that the 2007 Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) report had included an “unsubstantiated claim” that up to 40% of the Amazon rainforest could be sensitive to future changes in rainfall. The IPCC had referenced the claim to a report prepared for WWF by Andrew Rowell and Peter Moore, whom the article described as “green campaigners” with “little scientific expertise.” The article also stated that the authors’ research had been based on a scientific paper that dealt with the impact of human activity rather than climate change.

      In fact, the IPCC’s Amazon statement is supported by peer-reviewed scientific evidence. In the case of the WWF report, the figure had, in error, not been referenced, but was based on research by the respected Amazon Environmental Research Institute (IPAM) which did relate to the impact of climate change. We also understand and accept that Mr Rowell is an experienced environmental journalist and that Dr Moore is an expert in forest management, and apologise for any suggestion to the contrary.

      The article also quoted criticism of the IPCC’s use of the WWF report by Dr Simon Lewis, a Royal Society research fellow at the University of Leeds and leading specialist in tropical forest ecology. We accept that, in his quoted remarks, Dr Lewis was making the general point that both the IPCC and WWF should have cited the appropriate peer-reviewed scientific research literature. As he made clear to us at the time, including by sending us some of the research literature, Dr Lewis does not dispute the scientific basis for both the IPCC and the WWF reports’ statements on the potential vulnerability of the Amazon rainforest to droughts caused by climate change.

      In addition, the article stated that Dr Lewis’ concern at the IPCC’s use of reports by environmental campaign groups related to the prospect of those reports being biased in their conclusions. We accept that Dr Lewis holds no such view – rather, he was concerned that the use of non-peer-reviewed sources risks creating the perception of bias and unnecessary controversy, which is unhelpful in advancing the public’s understanding of the science of climate change. A version of our article that had been checked with Dr Lewis underwent significant late editing and so did not give a fair or accurate account of his views on these points. We apologise for this.

      The original article to which this correction refers has been removed

      The marker was never buried beneath the ice – and wasn’t installed on the summit in the first place, said surveyor Larry Signani, who led teams that remeasured the mountain’s height in 1988 and 1999.”

Each applicant asked for data from five different countries, 200 in all, which would have been a daunting task even for someone with nothing else to do. It was clear to Jones that the attack originated from an old adversary, the sceptical website Climate Audit, run by Steve McIntyre, a former minerals prospector and arch climate sceptic.”

    “Elsewhere, some voices have called for there to be a separate climate sceptics’ report. On one hand, this misses the point. If the sceptics’ science was good enough to be published in decent, peer-reviewed journals, it would be considered alongside everything else by the IPCC. But on the other hand, subjecting the deniers to the same degree of rigorous review as everyone else is a rather delicious prospect. If that was done, the final report would likely be short indeed.”

    He attempted to disable the hacking operation as it was taking place, but was prevented several times before finally succeeding because the hackers had penetrated deep into the website’s database software. This required considerable skill and knowledge which an opportunistic hacker would not have had, he said. “That requires some kind of monitoring-tool set-up and required them to have more access than you would get by simply logging into the blog,” Dr Schmidt said.

    An article in many Canwest papers suggested I believe that the UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change was tainted by political advocacy, that its chairman should resign, and that its approach to science should be overhauled.

    These statements do not accurately reflect my views. The IPCC has and continues to offer policy makers thoughtful and rigorous assessments of the science of climate change.

    ClimateGate emails ‘stolen by foreign spies’, in the Telegraph, Feb. 1:

      Reports that spies were involved should be taken with appropriate grains of salt, but here are some links for further background on the subject. Speculation regarding FSB involvement appeared previously in the Telegraph here (with alternate whistleblower theory pointed out by James Delingpole the next day here) and in the Independent here, where an IPCC executive was quoted as supporting the theory:

      “It’s very common for hackers in Russia to be paid for their services,” Professor Jean-Pascal van Ypersele, the vice chairman of the Inter-governmental Panel on Climate Change, said in Copenhagen at the weekend. “It’s a carefully made selection of emails and documents that’s not random. This is 13 years of data, and it’s not a job of amateurs.”

      The subsequent denial by the FSB was reported in the Daily Mail here (near the end of the article). The FSB was quoted anonymously:

      A Russian intelligence source claimed the FSB had new information which could cast light on who was behind the elaborate operation.

      “We are not prepared to release details, but we might if the false claims about the FSB’s involvement do not stop,” he said. “The emails were uploaded to the Tomsk server but we are sure this was done from outside Russia.”

      Two weeks later, the Daily Mail reported receipt of further information from the FSB here:

      But, anxious to distance themselves from the leak, the FSB revealed how the data had been sent to Siberia from a computer in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

      The evidence passed to The Mail on Sunday now raises questions about whether Chinese hackers, backed by the communist regime, are the source of the emails.

      A detailed analysis of the meta-data of the CRU e-mails and files that strongly suggests the e-mails were leaked instead of hacked appeared on Anthony Watts’ website here (with more background here).     Bless him, what would we do without Rajendra K. Pachauri‎. Link to an extended interview with Hindustan Times below. Following is a couple of snippets from the interview;

    On AR4;
    “There is only one error (Himalayan glaciers melting by 2035), to which we have admitted. After that the errors reported are spurious. They (some western media) said the IPCC claim on the losses from disasters was not from an authentic source. We checked the source; it was authentic. The IPCC was also correct on its claim on Amazon forests.”

    On the rise of climate skepticism;
    “there are 2,300 lobbyists in Washngton DC, whose only job is to see no policy, no legislation comes into existence that will tackle the problem of climate change.”

    On his income;
    “The IPCC does not pay me a single penny.”

    and also
    “The only thing I get reimbursed for is travel to IPCC meetings. […] I am grateful that my government has provided support to my institute […] so that I can function as the chair of the IPCC. But I get no payment from any source, certainly not the IPCC for anything I do.”

    Sensenbrenner, Issa, Barrasso, and Vitter Request Response to December 2, 2009 Letter on “Climategate”

    We also reiterate our request for the agency to turn over all documents and records related to the communications or other interactions with Hadley CRU dating from March 2007 through December 1, 2009 to our respective Committees no later than February 15, 2010.

    In addition, we request a written response to the following questions no later than February 15, 2009:

    1. EPA has asserted that “nothing in the emails undermines the science upon which the finding was based.” Has EPA conducted a thorough review of the Hadley CRU emails and documents? If so, who conducted the review? When was the review completed? Please discuss all of EPA’s findings and conclusions based on this review.

    2. If EPA has not conducted a review of the “Climategate” documents how can you state with certainty that “nothing in the emails undermines the science upon which the finding was based?”

    3. You have publically stated that “no new issues have been raised by the emails that were not already covered and discussed in response to comments.” Please identify the precise instances in the Endangerment Finding that responds to accusations of data manipulation at the Hadley CRU. Please also identify any instance where EPA discussed and accounted for accusations of corruption and manipulation of the peer review process has already been considered by EPA. Please note: A general reference to the Endangerment Finding or the Technical Support Document is not an adequate response.

    4. Please identify any research grants that EPA has awarded in the past 20 years to the Hadley CRU, to Phil Jones, or to Michael Mann. Your response should include the date the award was made, the amount of the award, and the project funded by the award. Your response should include any funding that materially benefited either the Hadley Center, Phil Jones, or Michael Mann.

    a) basic science is unchallengeable

    Detectives question climate change scientist over email leaks
    The Guardian, 4 February 2010:

    One piece of information that led police to question Dennis was the discovery of emails between him and Stephen McIntyre, who runs a sceptic blog in Toronto called Climate Audit. Climate Audit was the first to receive an anonymous link to the leaked data. Dennis subsequently emailed McIntyre to alert him to a Norwich University message confirming that a leak had occurred.

    Think-tanks take oil money and use it to fund climate deniers
    By Jonathan Owen and Paul Bignell, The Guradian, 7 February 2010

    The article is illustrated with a photograph of Steve with the caption, “Stephen McIntyre, who runs climateaudit.org, part of a network of climate change sceptics,” but neglects to provide the evidence linking Steve to either oil money or think-tanks. Instead, the article reasserts the link between Steve and Paul Dennis (background here), who once spoke at an event hosted by a foundation that once received a contribution from ExxonMobil.

    This article also claims ClimateAudit is “a site that was one of the first to receive an anonymous link to the original leaked data from UEA,” which appears to be a correction of a statement in the February 4th Guardian article on Paul Dennis (see quote here) claiming that ClimateAudit “was the first to receive an anonymous link to the leaked data.”

    We might err, but science is self-correcting
    If claims about climate change need to be debunked, you can rely on scientists to do it. Scepticism is what we are all about.
    by John Krebs
    Lord Krebs is Principal of Jesus College, Oxford

    Steve: My standard response to “science is self-correcting” is that markets are also self-correcting. If a stock is worthless, it will eventually go to zero. The purpose of requiring full, true and plain disclosure is to make markets more efficient and to protect the public. The only reason that climate science is being pressurized is that society is trying to go very rapidly from an article in a journal to policy decisions – thus there is a requirement for improved efficiency of the process and improved disclosure and due diligence. Just because there’s a problem with the Team doesn’t mean that there’s a problem with science; nor does the fact that most science works mean that there isn’t a problem with the Team.

    Fred Pearce Has a ‘new’ 12 part series in the Guardian – Part 1 discussion of Steves work – tag line being,

    In a unique experiment, The Guardian has published online the full manuscript of its major investigation into the climate science emails stolen from the University of East Anglia, which revealed apparent attempts to cover up flawed data; moves to prevent access to climate data; and to keep research from climate sceptics out of the scientific literature.

      This caught my eye:

      As well as including new information about the emails, we will allow web users to annotate the manuscript to help us in our aim of creating the definitive account of the controversy. This is an attempt at a collaborative route to getting at the truth.

    The most recent climategate news stories may be obtained from Google here, here, and here. From these searches, it appears that the media are writing climate-related news stories faster than I can post the links here. Some highlights:

    Global warming to become global cooling, says expert
    John Ingham, The Daily Express, 8 Februry

    Citing predictions by climatologists in the 1970s of a new Ice Age, Professor Beenstock said: “I predict that climatologists will look equally foolish in the years to come. Indeed, it may be already happening.”

    The case for climate action must be remade from the ground upwards
    Ian Katz, The Guardian, 8 February 2010

    Next, the credibility of the IPCC – or some form of scientific high court – must be restored. In the short term that means appointing independent experts to review any alleged errors in the panel’s reports. At the same time the IPCC should renounce, or at least severely restrict the use of, grey literature. “If that means you can’t be comprehensive then don’t be,” says a senior scientist advocating this course. There is a strong case for more radical reforms: the panel should arguably be replaced by a body controlled by national scientific academies rather than governments.

    Walker’s World: Climate facts and doubts
    Martin Walker, UPI, 8 February 2010

    With the capital city of the United States immobilized by the kind of snow that Moscow takes in stride, the phrase “global warming” is becoming a bad joke. But “climate change,” the preferred alternative of the scientists that allows them to blame hurricanes, floods and blizzards on carbon emissions, is also at increasing risk of mockery…

    “There’s been some dangerous crossing of that line,” [climatologist Andrew Weaver] told Canadian reporters. “The problem we have is that the IPCC process has taken on a life of its own. Some might argue we need a change in some of the upper leadership of the IPCC, who are perceived as becoming advocates.”

    The storm over climate change: Goldstein
    Lorrie Goldstein, Toronto Sun, 9 February 2010

    The U.K. government’s chief scientific advisor, John Beddington, has acknowledged some climate scientists exaggerated the impact of global warming and called for more honesty in explaining to the public the inherent uncertainties of predictions based on computer climate models, adding: “I don’t think it’s healthy to dismiss proper skepticism.”

    Does an Old Climate Critique Still Hold up?
    Andrew Revkin, The New York Times, 9 February 2010

    I have yet to see anyone provide definitive evidence — with no error bars — that the fingerprint of human-generated greenhouse gases (or other emissions or actions) is unequivocal. The only thing described as “unequivocal” in the report was the warming, not the cause, unless I really haven’t been paying attention for the last two decades.

    I’ve sent out an email to the lead authors and overall leaders of the report on the basic science and will update this post when they respond.

    An update containing a response by IPCC author Gabriele Hegerl has already been posted by Mr. Revkin.

    “An independent review into the ‘Climategate’ leaked email scandal at the University of East Anglia is due to begin today.”

    “The review by Sir Russell, who has no previous links with the climate science community or with the University of East Anglia, will examine whether there has been any manipulation or suppression of data “at odds with acceptable scientific practice”.

    Sir Muir Russell is a member of the Royal Society of Edinburgh. The RSE’s web site states: “The science that indicates that climate change is resulting from greenhouse gas emissions is well established, with the only real uncertainty being the scale of the future changes.”

    First US Governmental Group (Utah House of Representatives) to jump into Climategate. Looks like they landed with both feet too. A version of this bill has already passed their senate. Ut was introduced as a Joint Resolution.
    HJR 12
    http://www.freemeninstitute.com/utah-climate-change-epa-conspiracy.html

    The amended version isn’t nearly as much fun as the originally proposed version. A few highlights. A lot of people won’t want to go read the legalese. Any phrase surrounded by “H. [phrase or word] .H” was removed from the final draft

    This resolution:
    urges the United States Environmental Protection Agency to immediately halt its carbon dioxide reduction policies and programs and withdraw its “Endangerment Finding” and related regulations until a full and independent investigation of H. [ the ] .H climate data H. [ conspiracy ] .H and global warming science can be substantiated.

    WHEREAS, the United States Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA)
    “Endangerment Finding” and proposed action to regulate CO2 under the Clean Air Act is based on H. [ flawed ] questionable .H climate data and would place significant regulatory and financial burdens on all sectors of the nation’s economy at a time when the nation’s unemployment rate exceeds 10%;

    WHEREAS, the “hockey stick” global warming assertion has been discredited and climate alarmists’ carbon dioxide-related global warming hypothesis is unable to account for the current downturn in global temperatures;

    WHEREAS, emails and other communications between climate researchers around the globe, referred to as “Climategate,” indicate a well organized and ongoing effort to manipulate
    H. [ and incorporate “tricks” related to ] .H global temperature data in order to produce a global warming outcome;

    WHEREAS, there has been a concerted effort by climate change alarmists to marginalize those in the scientific community who are skeptical of global warming by manipulating or pressuring peer-reviewed publications to keep contrary or competing scientific viewpoints and findings on global warming from being reviewed and published;

    WHEREAS, Earth’s climate is constantly changing with recent warming potentially an indication of a return to more normal temperatures following a prolonged cooling period from 1250 to 1860 called the “Little Ice Age”;

    WHEREAS, H. [ the climate change “gravy train,” estimated at ] .H more than $7 billion annually in federal government grants, may have influenced the climate research focus and findings that have produced a “scientific consensus” at research institutions and universities;

    NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of the state of Utah urges the United States Environmental Protection Agency to immediately halt its carbon dioxide reduction policies and programs and withdraw its “Endangerment Finding” and related
    regulations until a full and independent investigation of H. [ the ] .H climate data H. [ conspiracy ] .H and global warming science can be substantiated.

    Snip this if it’s just too long.

    Jonathan Petre, The Daily Mail, 14 February 2010

    Professor Jones also conceded for the first time that the world may have been warmer in medieval times than now. Sceptics have long argued the world was warmer between 800 and 1300AD because of high temperatures in northern countries.

    Climate scientists hope independent reviews will reverse public’s loss of trust
    Ben Webster, The Times, 25 February 2010

    The Met Office, which supplies the global temperature trends used by the IPCC, has proposed that an international group of scientists re-examine 160 years of temperature data. The Met Office proposal is a tacit admission that its previous reports on such trends have been marred by their reliance on analysis by the University of East Anglia’s Climatic Research Unit.

    ANALYSIS-Scientists examine causes for lull in warming
    Gerard Wynn and Alister Doyle, Reuters, 25 February 2010

    Scientists said they must explain better how a freezing winter this year in parts of the northern hemisphere and a break in a rising trend in global temperatures since 1998 can happen when heat-trapping gases are pouring into the atmosphere.

    “There is a lack of consensus,” said Kevin Trenberth, head of the Climate Analysis Section at the U.S. National Center for Atmospheric Research, on why global temperatures have not matched a peak set in 1998, or in 2005 according to one U.S. analysis.

      Press Association, The Guardian, 25 February 2010

      [The university] insisted the CRU had not lost any primary data gathered from monitoring stations around the world.

      Note that the CRU website continues to state:

      We, therefore, do not hold the original raw data but only the value-added (i.e. quality controlled and homogenized) data.

    Gore’s original is called We Can’t Wish Away Climate Change and is noteworthy for a number of things, including this paragraph:

    In addition, e-mail messages stolen from the University of East Anglia in Britain showed that scientists besieged by an onslaught of hostile, make-work demands from climate skeptics may not have adequately followed the requirements of the British freedom of information law.

    The first time I’ve seen Gore admit that CRU scientists may have broken British FOI.

    Americans were increasingly worried about climate change until last year, when there was a surge in skepticism that’s still growing. Is it the economy? The news media?
