Ross McKitrick points out that IPCC AR4 Chapter 3 listed three Review Editors, one of whom was Bubu Jallow:
On Oct 31, 2006, Kevin Trenberth (with Phil Jones, one of two Coordinating Lead Authors of chapter 3) wrote to IPCC protesting Jallow’s inclusion as a Lead Author because he did not attend any meetings, answer any emails or play any “role” whatsoever in the preparation of Chapter 3.
IPCC listed Bubu Jallow as a Chapter 3 Review Editor anyway – presumably on the basis that there was nothing in his conduct that fell below IPCC standards for due diligence.

When the AGW crowd talks about a consensus, I suppose they include Mr. Jallow in it….
Perhaps I might chip in that there seems to have been an out break of honesty in the UK. Remember in March, UEA found that they did have the spreadsheet of comments from the “new guidelines”. Now two years after I first asked for it Reading Uni have found they did after all have something I asked for. There are a few interesting things but it is not Climatgate II and I don’t think its everything.
Also Ofcom have had an attack of honesty and pretty much admitted there never was a complaint from the IPCC. As Martin Durkin told me it just magically became so. As I am still dealing with the Information Tribunal I had better leave it at that, but it its a good story.

The Gambia Daily Observer had a very admiring piece on Babu Pateh Jallow, who was not at all shy about admitting his central role in the IPCC as an author and lead editor.
By his own account his many IPCC duties must have kept him very busy, which may explain why he didn’t have time to attend meetings or respond to Kevin’s emails.
It does seem there are irreconcilable difference between Babu Jallow’s testimonial modesty and Kevin Trenberth’s critical recollections.
The Gambia Observer finished by noting that Babu Pateh Jallow qualified for Nobel laureate standing, right along with Al Gore.

I suppose it’s a bit tricky to claim a consensus of 2,500 of the world’s leading climate scientists unless of course you can (as the IPCC has done here) get to pad out (by 33% in this case) the numbers a bit.

Steve actually started with this typo himself. The correct name is “Bubu” but Steve always writes “Babu”.
It’s surely politically correct for Bubu to be an IPCC co-author even without contributing one second of his life or one bit of information – that’s how the PC U.N. “science” works, and it is unfortunately not just the U.N. “science”. What wouldn’t they do for the sake of diversity? Fabricating the author lists is the smallest tiny “sin” they are always ready to make.

Actually, I thought you misspelled and meant Bubba Jallow. It sounds so much better, well natural, when talking about “tricks.”

Review Editors must submit a written report to the Working Group Sessions or the Panel and where appropriate, will be requested to attend Sessions of the Working Group and of the IPCC to communicate their findings from the review process and to assist in finalising the Summary for Policymakers, Overview Chapters of Methodology Reports and Synthesis Reports. The names of all Review Editors will be acknowledged in the Reports.”
If Jallow signed off as required of a Review Editor, was he committing -snip- ? If he did not sign off, is the IPPC Chapter 3 an invalid document that should be withdrawn?
Steve: Jallow sent a signed sign-off letter to IPCC as Review Editor.
Then if the accusation is correct, that Jallow did nothing except sign off, was he paid? If so, how much?

Oh, SNAP! I suspect you know what values were really being pursued here –inclusiveness for third world countries in the IPCC process, justified by facts or not. One more drop in the IPCC bucket of science being pimped out by politics.

Anyway, I cannot thank you enough for the pleasure your blog brings me each week when I read the latest chapter in this bizarre climate story. You couldn’t make this stuff up!
Of course, I still have nagging worries about the climate — humanity is likely messing things up just like in the Gulf of Mexico — but I long ago gave up on the IPCC for science; for me, at least, it’s now all about entertainment. 😉

I’ve been living in Europe for a good number of years now. That kind of language is normal here. It’s the product of mish-mash bureaucracy.
Allow me to translate what they are saying:

He could be a perfectly clever fellow with all sorts of degrees, but if he contributed nothing but was listed, it is “padding”.

My analysis of the CRU emails shows that 50% of the emails were accounted for by 32 people and 90% of the mails from only 12 high-level domains. This supports the contention that contributers like Buba Jallow were given sinecures to give the impression that there was a world-wide consensus.
