We have started getting a barrage of automated hits and spam comments from online poker sites – a pulse from a different site and IP address every day. It started about 3 weeks ago. Our spam filter seems to be working fine with respect to spam posting, but we don’t know how to block the hits themselves, which screw up recent hit statistics. Otherwise we are unaware of any other impact. If anyone has any bright ideas, we’d appreciate them.

Change your IP address ? Most of your readers will access you via your site name, so once the DNS have propagated the new lookup, you should be back to normal. If the spambots are using the IP, they will be lost.
Please note that this post is an example of a little knowledge being a dangerous thing, so I might be talking complete tosh.
For anyone who is interested, a combination of two plug-ins “Bad Behavior” and “Spam Karma 2” has completely filtered out the spam issue, including our statistics.
My appreciation to John A. for installing this software. To show you the importance of this and the growth of spambots, the software reported interception of 476(!) spam postings in the last 24 hours. For a while, we were under the radar screen of the spambots, but we are under continual assault right now. Steve PS I notice that 2 spams slipped through today.
Changing the IP address wouldn’t fix the problem. That’s for sure. New ID address can easily be discovered and the problem is here again.
The best possible solution is third party software which mentioned John. It has some advanced techniques of filtering spam, and also some manually options for moderator.
But my question here is what do you consider as a spam? I personally own poker-related Website and I like to comments on blogs and forums. Does it mean just because my site is gambling related my comment will be deleted?
