Spot the Hockey Stick #8: The Freeserve Brighton Website

Here’s a blast from the past. This particular site was used zillions of times on Usenet whenever global warming was "discussed".

I use the "scare quotes" because to describe what goes on on Usenet as "discussion" is like describing global thermonuclear war as "a mild case of suntan"

Anywho, here’s the graph of temperature and carbon dioxide for the last 1000 years Continue reading

Cubasch #3

Cubasch said:

After all, Mann’s study appeared in NATURE, a renowned peer-revewied specialist journal. In such cases, the IPCC team has to rely on peer review. To check each publication used in the IPCC report would take far too long.

Some more thoughts. Continue reading

Cubasch #2 and Replication #12

Bernd StràƒÆ’à‚⵨er commented that Cubasch told a German radio station about incorrectly located series in MBH98. Does this sound familiar? Continue reading

von Storch on MBH "Shoddiness"

von Storch made the following new comments also in German from Technology Review, translation again courtesy of Benny Peiser, about Mann’s "shoddiness": Continue reading

German Translation of Marcel Crok's Article With New Comments

Marcel Crok’s article on us from Natuurwetenschap & Techniek, available here in English translation, has now been translated into German by Technology Review here. It includes comments by Cubasch, von Storch, Mann, Latif and an interview with Stefan Rahmsdorff. I’ve posted up Benny Peiser’s translation of Cubasch’s comments and will post up Peiser’s translation of von Storch’s comments in a few minutes.

Cubasch on MBH "Can of Worms"

Ulrich Cubasch is Professor of Meteorology at the Free University in Berlin and a co-author of the 2007 IPCC Report. He reports that they are currently working on replicating Mann’s work and that his Ph.D. student "promptly found a can of worms". Continue reading

A number of readers here have complained about apparently legitimate posts being rejected at realclimate. If you happened to have saved them before being rejected, feel free to post them up in the comments to this post.

Spot The Hockey Stick #7: The International Geosphere-Biosphere Programme

I know what you’re thinking: Who, they?

Me too.

According to the website:

IGBP is an international scientific research programme built on interdisciplinarity, networking and integration. It addresses scientific questions where an international approach is the best or the only way to provide an answer. We add value to a large number of individual, national and regional research projects through integrating activities to achieve enhanced scientific understanding.

Data and Source Code: American Economic Review Policy

In our E&E article, we referred to the fact that the American Economic Review (AER) has adopted a policy for requiring authors to archive source code and data at the time of submission. These policies are online and worth looking at in detail. Continue reading

The MWP and LIA in Kenya and South Africa

In contrast to the claims of the Mann et al "Hockey Stick", practically all proxy records around the world show large scale multi-decadal and century-scale climatic variation.

As another example, here are some of the results from a study by Tyson, Holmgren et al (2000,2001) of Lake Naivasha in Kenya and a well documented stalagmite in a cave at Makapansgat, South Africa. The principle aim was to show a "teleconnection" between the two sites which are far apart, and show almost complete climatic anti-phase between each other.

The most interesting result is the imprint of the Medieval Warm Period and Little Ice Age in Africa. During the MWP, Lake Naivasha actually dried up for more than two centuries, Continue reading
