Thompson Gets New NSF Grant

Lonnie Thompson, senior research scientist at Ohio State University’s Byrd Polar Research Center, and his colleague Paolo Gabrielli, have just been awarded a three-year $588,000 grant from the NSF’s Division of Atmospheric and Geophysical Sciences “to assess the human impact on the chemical characteristics of the glaciers in the Himalaya and the Tibetan Plateau from […]

Mann on Irreproducible Results in Thompson (PNAS 2006)

Michael Mann’s new book, The Hockey Stick and the Climate Wars, discusses my comment [SMc note - this post is by Hu McCulloch] , “Irreproducible Results in Thompson et al., ‘Abrupt Tropical Climate Change: Past and Present’ (PNAS 2006),” that was published in 2009 in Energy & Environment. My comment pertained to an article by […]

Crowley Tries to Get Data from Jacoby

In 2004, prior to starting Climate Audit, I tried to get data from both Gordon Jacoby and Tom Crowley – neither experience being very pleasant. Climategate-2 emails provide an interest vignette in which Crowley got very frustrated trying to get data from Jacoby in 2008.

ICO Submission to Parliamentary Committee

The presentations to the UK Parliamentary Committee are online and many are very interesting. Take a look at the submission by UK Information Commissioner Richard Thomas here who adhere nicely to the policy issues. Here is part of his testimony – testimony that is far more compelling than the flaccid prevarications coming from the likes […]

Sciencemag Enforces Data Archiving

As I surmised, Science has taken a dim view of Kaufman’s failure to provide data that was supposedly “publicly available” and most of the problems have now been dealt with. There are still a couple of issues though. The three Finnish sediment series and one Canadian series have now been archived: ftp://ftp.ncdc.noaa.gov/pub/data/paleo/paleolimnology/europe/finland/nautajarvi2005.txt ftp://ftp.ncdc.noaa.gov/pub/data/paleo/paleolimnology/europe/finland/korttajarvi2003.txt ftp://ftp.ncdc.noaa.gov/pub/data/paleo/paleolimnology/europe/finland/lehmilampi2007.txt ftp://ftp.ncdc.noaa.gov/pub/data/paleo/paleolimnology/northamerica/canada/ellesmere/c2-1996.txt […]

How To Publish A Scientific Comment in 123 Easy Steps

is an engaging account by Rick Trebino of Georgia Tech on his experience in trying to publish a scientific comment in a field far less controversial than climate science. Readers can doubtless think of analogous experience in climate science. (h/t Chas) Trebino was stonewalled by the authors when he sought data and methods – again […]

NAS Report on Data and Methods Disclosure

Jeff Id on the Air Vent has written a post pointing out the recent publication online of a report by the Committee on Ensuring the Utility and Integrity of Research Data in a Digital Age from the National Academy of Sciences: Ensuring the Integrity, Accessibility, and Stewardship of Research Data in the Digital Age. I […]

Nature Reports on CRU Stonewalling

Nature reported today on the CRU data requests. I was interviewed at length last Thurs, followup Friday by Olive Heffernan of Nature. They even asked for a photograph. I haven’t seen the article yet. More after I see the story. Update: There is an additional discussion at the Nature Blog. Behave nicely. Update- my picture […]

Glenn McGregor: Data Archiving not required by the International Journal of Climatology

After nearly 2 months and several inquiries, the editor of the International Journal of Climatology has finally said that they do not require authors to provide supporting data. Given that funding agencies rely on academic journals to ensure that authors archive data (improperly abdicating their own responsibilities), the moral of this should be that the […]

Another Brick in the Wall

After years of effort, the chronologies of Briffa et al 2001 were recently made public, although the date on which these became public is itself clouded in mystery. [Update - this minor mystery is clarified: it looks like the data was unlocked on Sep 9, 2008, the day after my FOI request but before my […]
